Mornings on our homestead start long before the sun fully rises. There’s a quiet rhythm to it now, one that feels both full and peaceful, even in the middle of the busyness. This is our homestead morning routine, rooted in simple living, animal care, and homeschool life.
My husband is the first one up and out the door, heading to work before daylight has a chance to break over the horizon. While most of the house is still sleepy, he’s already stepping into his day.
Not long after, the rest of us begin to stir.
Starting the Day With Praise
One of the first things I do each morning is turn on worship music. Sometimes it’s old hymns, sometimes it’s contemporary worship songs, but either way, it’s always LOUD. Just the way I like it! Before breakfast has even started, our home is filled with songs of praise. It sets the tone for everything that follows and reminds us where our focus belongs before the demands of the day begin.
It’s not quiet. It’s not calm in the traditional sense. But it’s good.
Feeding and Watering the Animals
As the music plays, the kids begin their morning chores, which is an essential part of our homestead routine with animals and one of the ways we teach responsibility.
Each animal depends on us, and mornings are when that care begins:
- The dogs are eager and waiting, tails wagging the moment they hear movement.
- The barn cats wind around ankles, meowing for their breakfast.
- The chickens greet us with soft clucks as they anticipate fresh feed and water.
- The ducks are a little louder about their needs, always ready to splash and snack.
- The goats are perhaps the most enthusiastic of all, calling out as soon as they know we’re nearby.
Water buckets are checked and refilled. Feed is scooped and distributed. These daily farm chores are simple but deeply meaningful, grounding us in the responsibility of caring for our animals.

Cooking a Simple Homestead Breakfast
While the kids are finishing up chores, I’m usually in the kitchen preparing breakfast. Some mornings are simple: eggs and sourdough toast. Other days feel a little slower, with something warm cooking on the stove.
The house smells like food, the music continues in the background, and one by one, everyone trickles back inside.
We gather, we eat, and we talk about what needs to be done that day.
It’s not fancy, but it’s ours, and it’s part of our simple homestead lifestyle.

Transitioning Into Our Homeschool Routine
Once the animals are cared for and breakfast is finished, we shift into our homeschool routine.
There’s a natural transition here when chores are completed, bodies fed, hearts centered, and now we’re ready to learn.
Books come out, notebooks are opened, and we settle into lessons for the day. Some days go smoothly, others require a bit more patience, but the foundation laid in the morning helps carry us through.

The Beauty of Homestead Living
Our mornings aren’t perfect. They can be loud, messy, and a little chaotic at times. But they are also filled with purpose.
From feeding and watering animals to sharing meals and learning together, our mornings reflect the heart of homestead living.
Simple. Full. Intentional.
From our homestead to yours,
Eliza
